Swanage 2nds v Royal Challengers - Swanage won the toss and batted first and suffered the early loss of Pedro. A partnership of 48 between Mike (29) and Tim (23) looked to have put the Swans in a good position before a collapse suddenly had Swanage 59 – 5. A rebuilding job by Woody (20) and Sam (15) in a partnership of 38 go Swanage back in the match but it was slow going against an excellent bowling attack. Late runs by Dave (15) and Ryan got Swanage to 132 – 8.

Wickets fell regularly in the Challengers innings with 2 wickets from C and tight bowling all round from Charlie, Ryan Mike and Ron. 2 wickets from Dave and a couple of run outs got Swanage close but they fell just short as the Challengers scraped home by 1 wicket Swanage 132 – 8 Royal Challengers 133 - 9

1st June

After a winning performance last week, the seconds crashed back down to earth as they were beaten by Abbotsbury in the ‘Battle of the Swans’ Batting first, Swanage lost Dessie early on before Chris (16) and Tim (25) put together what proved to be the best partnership of the innings of 24. After Chris was bowled wickets fell regularly before late resistance by Matt and Ron got Swanage up to 93 all out.

It was always going to be a difficult total to defend and with Abbotsbury captain Simon Pengelly leading the way on 54 not out it proved so. Swanage bowled well though from Charlie and C at the outset to – Dave 2 – 23 and Ron 2 – 21 who gave us some hope before Abbotsbury ended on 94 – 5. 25th May

Versus Bradford Abbas the seconds got their first win of the season curtesy of a good all-round team performance. Charlie and C opened the bowling and kept it tight right from the off. C’s 8 overs for 18 were only spoilt by no wickets as the ball never quite went to hand, whilst Charlie bowled his best spell of the season so far. A brilliant run out by debutant David Alcock gave Swanage their first wicket. Matt nearly got Swanage’s second with what would have been a brilliant caught and bowled while Simon bowled well but for once again for no reward. It was Dave and Ron who made the breakthroughs taking 4 and 3 wickets a piece ably assisted by Charlie with 2 catches – yes catches - and Scott who had a great game behind the stumps and got 2 stumpings. From 100 – 1 to 181 all out Bradford Abbas had left Swanage a total they could chase down.

The loss of Woody in the second over didn’t bode well but David (35) and Tim (56) put together a partnership of 127 to put Swanage well on their way to victory – though an early all run 4 nearly finished them both off!!!! With only 9 fielders there were plenty of gaps which they exploited well.  It was left to Scott (23) and Charlie (34) to finish the game off as Swanage ran out the winners with 9.3 overs to spare and their first 20 points of the season Bradford Abbas 181 all out Swanage 182 – 3 Swanage won by 7 wickets

18th May

On a wet and grey day the seconds fell to their third defeat of the season away to Wimborne and Colehill. Partnerships of 67, between Pedro, who carried his bat for 89 not out and Tim(30), and 108 between Pedro and Mike(53) before a rapid 16 from Geoff, were the back bone of the 221 total. The question was - would it be enough? As the drizzle fell, the ball became slippery and increasingly out of shape.

The frustrated Swanage bowlers were not supported in the field as a series of dropped catches gave Wimborne a great opening partnership of 140. A few late wickets kept the Swans in with a chance but Wimborne were able to secure victory with 3 overs to spare.

11th May

Swanage 2nds v Martinstown

In an exciting finish Swans fell just short of the 265 required ending up with 12 points despite losing. Bowling first Swans were immediately under pressure as the Martinstown openers hit the ball to all parts. Pete Barker kept it tight with 1-26 in 8 overs. Jon Gregory bowled well but it was Matt Dunster and Charlie Dyke who were finally able to keep the runs in check as they took 3 wickets each. The formidable total looked far away after the early loss of Simon Fitch but a partnership of 50 between Pete Baczala (59) and Tim Ives, followed by a 100 partnership between Pete and Scott Orchard (66) kept Swanage in the match. A rapid partnership of 69 between Charlie (41) and Jon (22) at the end nearly swung it but the seconds fell just short. A great game played on a fantastic pitch and over 500 runs scored. 4th May

Swanage 2nds v Chalke Valley

Swanage batted first and openers Dessie and Chris encountered an amazing first over which saw 14 runs without a run off the bat. As the Swans raced passed last year's total of 36 all out things were looking good. A partnership of 40 between Scott and Tim took (29) us towards our first batting point before a mini collapse saw us tumble to 108 - 6. Determined batting by Simon (31) and Tia with a partnership of 33 saw Swanage to just shy of 150 before Swanage collapsed again to 148 all out. In reply, Chalke's Southern League player, Joe Weld, dominated proceedings despite excellent bowling by C and Ryan. Two fabulous catches by Ryan and Simon were the highlights as well as a master class in fielding by Tommy and Geoff's efforts behind the stumps. Ron's attempts to buy wickets late on and gain some points were only rewarded the once as Tommy crowned his performance with another excellent catch, but Chalke ran out winners by 7 wickets leaving Swanage with only 4 points despite their best efforts.
