Youth Cricket 2014

The entire youth section from the 6 year-old’s playing KWIK-CRICKET right the way through to the 15 year-old’s have had a fantastically enjoyable summer recording some memorable performances/results – as well as attending their first-ever T20 Blast match at the Rose Bowl.

The club would like to place on record their gratitude to all of their coaches:- Peter Clark, Jon Dorey, David Haines, Tim Ives, Mike Nash and Andy Tillman for all of their sterling efforts this summer. The club would also like to acknowledge a note of thanks to Chris Suttle – from Suttle Stone Quarries for sponsoring our recent, very successful Youth Presentation/Family Fun Day.

Old versus Young

The Youth season is now finished after the season finale of an inaugural Young v Old match on Sunday 24th of August. In an exciting match filled with father versus son contests the Oldies set an imposing 180 off their 35 overs with Geoff Willcocks (38ret) and Pete Barker (30) leading the way. Tom Woolen led the way with bowling with 3-19 from his 4 overs.

In reply the Youngies paced their chase perfectly as first Charlie (23) and Chunk (35ret) then Mike (35ret) and Jem (35ret) kept them up with the run rate. In a thrilling finish Jack(8no) and Sam (14no) got the Youngies over the line with just one ball to spare.

Swanage U15s v Ellingham

In their final game of the season the U15s had to travel once again to Ellingham and in an exciting match they had their 5th win in a row as Tom Woolen (23) and Matt Dunster (12) saw them over the line. This meant they finished an impressive third in the table – below.

Swanage U15s v Parley Panthers 29th July 2014

The U15s recorded their fourth win in a row as they had a comfortable victory against a weakened Parley side. Batting first, Will (36 ret) and Chunk (12) opened up and got Swanage off to their usual fast start. Chunk’s dismissal was quickly followed by that of Josh Evans but that only brought Steve (35 ret) to the crease. He and Will built on the good start and once Will retired Steve was joined by Alex (38 ret). They took Swanage to over 150 before the next wicket fell. Quick runs and wickets at the end allowed Swanage to reach 162 in their 20 overs.

In reply Parley got off to a great start, getting to nearly 50 before the first wicket fell. Good bowling by Alex (1-9), Josh (3-11), Tom (1 -14) and Will (2-6) kept the wickets falling and the runs down and gave Swanage the chance to give everyone a bowl. As the light faded Charlie bowled the final over which led to a run out on the final ball, as Parley reached 103 all out.

Swanage won by 59 runs

Swanage Bay Swim

U11 Ryan Lander came second in the 100 Metre Fun Swim sharing the the Jamie Pascall Trophy for the first local swimmer. U15 Steve Woolley also came second this time in the 200 Metre Fun Swim. Head of youth cricket David Haines put in a brave endurance swim in the 1000 metre swim made even lengthier by his occasional losses of direction.

Swanage v Old Minchendenians

Friday’s friendly against regular touring team Old Minchendenians saw a great win for Swanage with Chunk scoring a fabulous 75 opening the batting. His maiden 50 for a senior side was full of characteristic drives mixed with his increasingly good defence.

Swanage U15s v Wimborne and Colehill 22th July 2014

In a tight game the U15s continued their winning run as Ryan Stearn took his second catch of the evening off the bowling of Rufus Dory, leaving Wimborne 9 runs short. Once again Swanage batted first but lost the usually high scoring Cameron (6) early on after another high scoring couple of overs with Steve (13). After the loss of Jack for a duck it was Rufus (36 ret) and Ryan (12 not out) who held the innings together with a partnership of 35 before Rufus retired. Ryan and Alex (14 not out) took Swanage to the 20 overs, with a final total of 106 – 4.
It was always going to be a close finish and Wimborne got off to a good start with 28 off the first four overs. Alex (1-14) brought Swanage back into it with the first wicket and further wickets by Callum (1-5) and Jack (1-11) kept Swanage in the game. The score kept rising however and with the score at 72 -3 at the end of the 11th over it looked as if Wimborne were on their way to victory. The next 2 overs were decisive as first Rufus (2-9) and then Tom (1-14) took wickets. but Wimborne were not finished yet. With overs to spare Swanage needed to bowl Wimborne out and the retirement of opener Tom Andrews (36 ret) helped their cause before the returning Steve (1-17) and Rufus finished Wimborne off, leaving them 97 all out.

Swanage 106 – 4 Wimborne 97 all out
Swanage won by 9 runs

Swanage U13s v Broadstone 21st July 2014

For their final game of the season the U13s travelled to Broadstone. In a high scoring encounter the U13s gave their best batting performance of the season, with 4 batsmen reaching double figures, a fifty partnership and Charlie Dyke (38) having to retire for passing 35.
Fielding first it was a difficult start for Swanage as Harry Knott (36) set about the bowling. After his retirement it was Benjamin Wright who got the first breakthrough before more strong batting saw Broadstone passing the 100 mark.
All the bowlers tried to peg Broadstone back with Matt Dunster, Henry Counsell and Sam Willcocks all taking wickets. But a fast outfield made things difficult and despite some good fielding, notably by Henry and Archie Ramsden, the score reached 191 in the 20 overs.
With regular openers Callum Dimarco (9) and Tom Hayes (0) reunited, Swanage were hoping for a good start but sadly this wasn’t to be as Tom was out in the first over. This brought Sam (22) to the crease and after a cautious start he and Callum put together one of the U13s best partnerships of the season, putting on 33 for the second wicket. Sam’s joint top score of 22 took him past the 100 runs for the season.
Swanage suffered a setback when they were both out in the same over, but this brought Charlie (38) and Matt (12) together to begin what proved to be the U13s biggest partnership of the season of 58. Showing the confidence that they had built up through the season they defended well but then played an array of shots around the wicket as they took the fight back to Broadstone. They both doubled their highest scores of the season before Charlie retired and then Matt was out soon after.
Henry (11) carried on run scoring with his third double figure score in the last 4 matches before a flurry of wickets left Thomas Johnson marooned not out at the end.

Broadstone 191 – 4 Swanage 108 all out

T20 Blast Hampshire v Sussex 18th July 2014

The Youth Section had its first trip to a T20 Blast game at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton to watch Hampshire against Sussex. It was a great game and despite a century by England T20 star Luke Wright Sussex just fell short of the Hampshire total of 177-3. We had our photo with some of the Hampshire team and joined a lap of honour with lots of other cricket clubs and schools

Swanage U15s v Ellingham 16th July 2014

After their first win against Wimborne and Colehill the U15s were looking for another win against Ellingham. Batting first, Swanage got off to a flying start with Steve Woolley (18) and Will Hutchins (14) adding 37 for the first wicket in less than 4 overs. Alex Wood (9) and Charlie Dyke (15) kept the momentum going before Cameron Beard (35 ret) and Rory Ferguson (19) continued Swanage’s fast scoring rate. With the Battrick boys in at the end Swanage ended on 140 all out, the only disappointment being that we were unable to bat their full 20 overs.
In reply, Ellingham got off to a similarly good start before Steve (2-14) broke the opening partnership. Charlie (1-26) heralded a collapse as Rory and the Battricks all took wickets as Ellingham ended on 97 all out.

Swanage 140 all out Ellingham 97 all out
Swanage won by 43 runs

Swanage U13s v Parents 14th July 2014

With a free date in their fixture diary the U13s played host to a game against their parents at Day’s Park on Monday. Playing the U11 pairs game to ensure family against family rivalry it was parent’s captain Andy Dunster who won the toss and chose to bat.

With the score starting at 200,Andy(12) opened with Anthony Dyke and it was round one to the parents as they set about the bowling of sons Matt and Charlie. After their four overs, 32 had been added to the score for no loss of wickets as they both hit 4s, Andy scoring an all important four off Matt.

Next up it was Jo and Kevin Dimarco who added more runs including a 5. There was some good news for the U13s as son Callum had dad Kevin caught off his bowling. But the score continued to rise to 246 at the end of their overs. The husband and wife theme continued with Sarah(10) and Nigel Hayes, this time bowled to by their sons Tom and Sam. Tom went close to bowling his dad but mum Sarah showed true batting class as she hit Sam for two boundaries.

Husband and wife changed to father and son as Steve and George Battrick took the crease with Tommy bowling against them. George(28) hit the first ball for 6 and followed it up with 5 fours in their 3 overs as the parents raced to 300. The cheering crowd of parents were convinced they had already won the game.

The pressure of bowling to mum Louise was too much for Henry Counsell in his first over as he bowled 4 wides, but his second over saw some success for the U13s as he got her out twice. Bowling partner Benjamin Wright took the catch but he had no luck bowling against his mum Pauline, though he did get Louise out for the third time.

The much anticipated Willcocks against Willcocks clash was next up but they had to wait for the showdown as Nic Johnson had a successful over against son Thomas. Sam started well with a dot ball but as the next 2 balls went for 4 it was looking like Geoff (19) was going to be the winner. A 4 and a 6 to end the over meant 18 off the over and the parents at 330. The final 3 overs saw Archie and Ludo bowling to dads Simon (14) and Mervyn. Once again it was victory to the parents as fours galore meant the total finished on an impressive 358.
The U13s started well with Henry and Benjamin (15) adding 34 for the first pair. Benjamin hitting 3 fours and putting the U13s ahead at this early stage. Next to the crease were Charlie (20) and Sam, who made a great start as Charlie hit his dad Anthony for three 4s in a row. Sadly it couldn’t last as first he was caught by Andy off Anthony’s bowling (leading to much celebration) and then twice more. Sam managed to hit Geoff for 4 as the U13s ended this pairing on 249 – just 3 runs ahead.
Callum and Tommy were next up and they kept the U13s in touch despite Tommy getting out early on. Matt and Thomas followed and had a good innings helped by a few wides and fours, Matt hitting Andy for 4 his first of the season. Thomas batted well but got out once to his dad’s bowling leaving the U13s at 291 with 2 pairs to go.
The renewed battle of Hayes against Hayes was to be decisive. Despite no wickets the runs scored were not enough to equal the 32 scored earlier by the parents, leaving Archie and Ludo needing 49 to win off their 4 overs. Despite a valiant effort, including Ludo hitting dad Mervyn for a 4, the U13s ended up 26 runs short.

A victory for the parents though some counted up to 16 fielders at one point which may have made all the difference!!! The BBQ was a closer affair with the U13s managing to eat the most burgers but in the bar it was once again the parents who triumphed.
Next year’s rematch is already an eagerly anticipated….

Swanage U13s v Wimborne and Colehill 7th July 2014

As the season nears its end Swanage U13s played Wimborne for the second time. Sam Willcocks won the toss, giving Swanage a chance to show how much their batting had improved after they had struggled last time around.
Without usual opener Tom Hayes, Callum Dimarco (10) and Charlie Dyke (3) opened the batting. The early loss of Charlie brought Sam (15) to the crease and he gave Swanage a real impetus, hitting consecutive balls for 4 and 6. Along with Callum they put together a partnership of 34. Further runs from Henry Counsell (13 not out) kept Swanage moving forward but as wickets fell at the other end he was left not out at the end of the innings. This left Swanage with a total of 72 all out.
The Wimborne reply started briskly as they set about getting the total. A good catch from Tommy Battrick off the bowling of Benjamin Wright gave Swanage a chance but more good batting saw Wimborne to victory without any further wickets.

Hampshire v Sussex T20 Blast 18th July 2014

Swanage U15s v Wimborne and Colehill 1st July 2014

After coming so close to their first win against Ellingham this time the U15s made no mistake against Wimborne and Colehill. Another good opening partnership this time between Cameron Beard (36 ret) and Steve Woolley (35 ret) set Swanage on their way to another big total. Support from Alex Wood (23 no) and some late hitting out by George Battrick (9 no) saw Swanage reach 134 – 2 in their 20 overs.
Steve gave Swanage the perfect start with a wicket on the first ball of the Wimborne innings. Another by Alex kept Swanage on top before the crucial 5th over. A triple wicket maiden by U13 Charlie Dyke put Swanage on the edge of victory. They had to wait until the full 20 overs to celebrate as Wimborne dug in to reach 93 – 6.

A well deserved first win of the season for the U15s after all their hard work in the last few weeks.

Swanage 134 – 2 Wimborne and Colehill 93 – 6

Swanage U13s v Verwood 30th June 2014

Another long journey for the U13s but it was worth it for another good performance against a strong Verwood side. Batting first, Swanage lost the usually reliable Tom Hayes early on. It was his latest opening partner Callum Dimarco (14) who got the innings going with solid defence mixed with an array of attacking shots to get his highest score of the season. Partnerships of 17 with Sam Willcocks (5) and 18 with Matt Dunster (5) got Swanage back into the game. Runs kept coming but the wickets kept falling with Matt left once again to hold the innings together. He found a good partner in Benjamin Wright (11) who equalled his seasons best score following on from his good form for the U11s on Saturday. Henry Counsell wasn’t able to repeat his brilliant knock of last week but the first runs of the season for Alistair McGregor (4) saw Swanage reach a competitive 76 all out in their 20 overs.
Tight early bowling by Benjamin and Sam gave Swanage an encouraging start in the Verwood innings. Fantastic fielding by Tommy Battrick finished off by Tom Hayes led to an early run out. More accurate bowling by Charlie Dyke and Tommy kept the pressure on Verwood. Tommy’s last ball saw another wicket with a good catch by Sam, leaving Verwood at 31-2 and all to play for.
Sadly, Verwood opener Jack Driscoll took the game away from Swanage as he compiled an innings of 31 not out, despite the best efforts of the Swanage bowlers and fielders, leading Verwood to their victory target.
Another solid performance, especially with the bat, and a much closer game for the U13s who have two matches remaining this season.
Swanage 76 all out Verwood 80 – 2

Swanage U11s v Christchurch 28th June 2014

Following a difficult start to the season, Swanage U11 completed the second match of the year. Captain Ryan Lander won the toss and elected to bat first. Starting on a score of 200, the first pair of Ryan (5) and Benjamin Wright (17) finished their 4 overs of batting on 224, having lost 2 wickets, with Benjamin hitting 4 big boundaries along the way.
The next pair of Safia Nadaf and Lily Wood came in and played a very careful, but valuable innings. Safia finished the spell with 10, including 2 well played boundaries, and Lily finished on 1, with 2 wickets lost. Their overs finished with the score at 233.

Reuben Bennett and Tia Norman were the next pair to bat, and following a slow first over Reuben (15) hit 3 boundaries, including one exquisite lofted drive back over the bowler. Tia (1) batted very well in support. After the 4 overs, they had not lost a wicket and had scored a total of 28 runs, finishing with a team total of 261. As a result of this performance, Reuben was voted by his teammates as batsman of the day.
The final pair saw Isaac Christmas and Mia Werndley come to the crease. By this point, runs were hard to come by and with the loss of just 1 wicket finished with a total of 269.
This was the highest total that the U11 had ever made, which showed just how much progress had been made over the early season. The players took to the field with a real belief that they had a chance of winning their first game.

At the beginning of Christchurch’s innings, Ryan took a wicket with the 3rd ball of his over, clean bowling the batsman with a full, straight, quick delivery. And spirits were on a high. Benjamin, Mia and Reuben followed with one over each to the first pair, all bowling very well but not taking another wicket – Christchurch’s first partnership finishing with a total of 221.
The next pair came in and Safia was ready to face them. One batsman in particular was in the mood to be aggressive from the off, hitting 17 off of Safia’s first over. However, her cousin Lily came to her aid in the very next over, bowling him out with her 3rd ball with a beautiful swinging delivery. This slowed down the run rate and after the pairs allotted overs, Christchurch were on 257.

Tia Norman came on to bowl her first over of the day to the new pair. She bowled the first wicket maiden that Swanage U11 has ever had, bowling out Christchurch’s U13 girl with an amazing floated delivery. The team all rushed to congratulate her as it was her first ever competitive wicket, and earned her bowler of the day.
Reuben and Tia bowled the next 2 overs very tightly. There was another wicket to fall, with a run out from Benjamin. This helped him to joint fielder of the day, after finishing level on votes with Lily.

Mia bowled the last over in the partnership and got her 2nd wicket of the season, sending down a very impressive spinning delivery with the first ball of the over.
After 12 overs, Christchurch were on 261 – the same score that Swanage were on at that point. This meant that the last four overs promised to be exciting and slightly nerve-wracking for the crowd of parents watching.
Unfortunately, Swanage were unable to take any more wickets, and following some good shots from the final pair, Christchurch finished on 283, winning the game by 14 runs.

Swanage were very upbeat at the end, realising just how well they had done as a team, as well as achieving a number of personal milestones.
A massive thank you to the parents who drove to the match and supported the players. A personal thank you goes to Ryan Norman for stepping in to umpire the match.

Swanage U13s v Parley Pirates 23rd June 2014

In a repeat of their first game of the season, Swanage U13s travelled to Parley for the first round of the Plate. A difficult draw against one of the top sides but also a chance to measure progress so far. With Parley batting first, hopes were high after recent good fielding and bowling performances.
Sadly for Swanage it was a mixed start with some inconsistent bowling but also an early wicket from Charlie Dyke. Opening partner Sam Willcocks bowled tightly but without success after his 4 wicket haul of last week. Good first overs by Benjamin Wright, Tommy Battrick and Archie Ramsden were followed by not so good second overs and excellent batting by Parley saw the score grow steadily. Despite the retirements of Squire and Nicholls, Swanage still couldn’t get another break through until Matt Dunster finally took the second wicket in the 19th over. Some good keeping by Tom Hayes helped keep the score down but Parley still ended their innings with a total of 186 in their 20 overs.
After their recent poor team batting displays, Swanage showed great determination throughout the innings. Tom(8) and Callum Dimarco(2), opening for the first time, showed the way opening the batting but everyone showed great defence and a commitment to staying in for as long as they could. Matt(6) typified this determination by staying in for 12 overs, sharing partnerships with first Benjamin Wright (6) and later a partnership of 21 with high scorer Henry Counsell (16) who struck three fours for his best score of the season. It was left to Sam and Archie to see out the final over as Swanage ended on 65-7 not bowled out for only the second time this season.
If Swanage can put recent bowling and fielding performances together with today’s batting performance a second win could be near at hand.

Parley 186 – 2 Swanage 65 – 7

Dorset School’s Vase

Purbeck School U15s are through to the semi final of the Vase after a comfortable victory against QE on Thursday. Batting first Purbeck scored 136-1 with Cameron Beard leading the way with 54 not out. In reply QE could only manage 108-9 with George Battrick taking a hat trick. They now play Poole High on Tuesday for a place in the final.

Swanage U15s versus Poole U15s 17th June 2014

After last week’s close defeat against Ellingham the U15s were hoping to bounce back with a win. Swanage started well with Steve Woolley (2 – 14) and Alex Wood (1 -18) opening the bowling and keeping the runs down as well as getting an early wicket. Good batting by Thomas and Khambekir started to take the game away from Swanage but some good bowling and fielding kept the scoring under control. Tom Woolen and Tommy Battrick along with the returning Steve and Alex led to a flurry of wicket but it was Swanage’s old enemy of wides that undermined the bowling leaving Poole 137 -5 off their 20 overs.
Batting second against tight Poole bowling Swanage soon started to fall behind the run rate. Despite the runs of Cameron Beard (14) and Steve Woolley (10) Swanage found it hard to catch up and ended up 77 all out.

Poole 137-5
Swanage 77 all out

Swanage U13s versus Christchurch 16th June 2014

Another long away journey to Christchurch for the U13s latest game. Batting first for only the second time this season Swanage came up against some tight Christchurch bowling. Despite some improved defensive play they still lost early wickets. Sam Willcocks (16) and Benjamin Wright (4) steadied the ship with a partnership of 17. But once Sam was out wickets kept falling and until the loss of Benjamin left Matt Dunster not out at the end and Swanage all out for 31.
Despite the small total Swanage didn’t give up with Sam (4-28) taking 2 wickets in his first over. Another wicket in his next over kept Swanage in the game but the runs kept coming. The scores were level when some good fielding led to a run out leaving Christchurch 4 down. There was to be no miracle ending though as the next ball saw Christchurch over the line.
To allow other players to bat and bowl after a short match the game continued. Good bowling by Benjamin (0-9) and Archie Ramsden (0-8) then almost a wicket for Alistair McGregor kept it interesting. After a good partnership in the middle of the innings Swanage picked up the pressure again with another run out, before Sam took his 4th wicket to end the game.

Swanage 31 all out
Christchurch 32 – 4

Swanage U11s versus Parley 14th June 2014

After so many disappointments, the U11s finally started their season coming up against a tough Parley side in their first game. The pairs format allows everyone to bat and bowl as batsmen get 4 overs in a pair, with runs taken away for wickets and the total adding on from 200.
Captain Ryan Lander opened the bowling along with Lily Wood keeping Parley down to 33 runs. For the second batting pair it was Benjamin Wright and Safia Nadaf who kept things tight, conceding just 23 runs between them. Swanage’s first wicket came from bowler of the match, Mia Werndley, as she and Tia Norman took up the attack. They had Swanage’s best passage of play, conceding just 17 runs along with the wicket. It was the final pair that really added on the runs with one batsmen scoring a quick fire 36. Some good bowling and fielding with Isaac Christmas, the standout fielder behind the stumps, left Parley with a total of 314.
All the Swanage pairs found batting difficult, with Benjamin and Herbie Angel ending up in the highest credit as Parley bowled accurately throughout taking 8 wickets. A six by Benjamin and four by batsmen of the match Tia were the highlights as Swanage finished on 189.
A difficult match, but at last their season is underway.
Parley 314 Swanage 189

Match Report – Swanage U15s versus Ellingham 10th June 2014

In a tense finish Swanage U15s came close to their first victory of the season against Ellingham. The game went to the last over where fortunes swung first to Swanage as Charlie Dyke took a tumbling catch off the bowling of Callum Dimarco but quickly swung back to Ellingham as the next ball went for four to win them the game.
Batting first Swanage started strongly with Cameron Beard (31 retired) and Alex Wood (33 retired) putting together Swanage’s best opening partnership of the season. Things faltered after they had retired with only Tom Woolen (11 not out) reaching double figures, but Swanage still reached their highest total of the season at 133-5 in their 20 overs.
Consistent bowling by Steve Woolley (0-14) and Alex Wood (1-18) gave Swanage a good start as the Ellingham batsmen found scoring difficult. The old problem of wides kept Ellingham in the game as Jack McDermott and Tom Woolen tried to keep Swanage on top but the score kept rising. Needing 30 runs off the last 4 overs the wickets started to tumble firstly a couple of run outs and then wickets by Callum (2-13) and Charlie (1-18). As tensions rose Ellingham’s batsmen kept their nerve to get over the line with just 4 balls to spare.

Match Report Swanage U13s versus Bournemouth Otters 9th June 2014

Swanage U13s Matt, Archie,Callum, Sam, Ryan, Benjamin and Charlie watch openers Tom and Tommy start Swanage’s reply against Bournemouth Otters.

Despite their best bowling and fielding performance of the year, Swanage U13s were unable to reach the total of 84 set by Bournemouth Otters in their latest league game. Bowling first, Sam Willcocks (0-12) and Charlie Dyke (4-21) led the way. Sam bowled tightly but it was Charlie once again who took the first wicket as Matt Dunster took an excellent catch. Charlie’s second wicket put Swanage on top but it was followed by a match-winning partnership of 38 for Bournemouth.
When Callum Dimarco (3-6) took his first wicket Swanage upped their game. Tommy Battrick’s 2 catches and good ground fielding by the whole team saw the runs dry up. The bowling remained tight with good spells by Benjamin Wright (0-14), Ryan Lander (1-3) and Matt (0-20). It was Charlie and Callum who finished the innings off both taking 2 wickets in an over. Charlie finished with his second 4 wicket haul of the season and Callum with his best bowling figures for the U 13s.
Batting second, Swanage started with a determined partnership of 14 between Tom Hayes (7), who once again batted well, and Tommy (4). Tight bowling meant Swanage found it difficult to score. After the openers fell, other wickets quickly followed leaving Swanage all out for 29 with not even Matt and Archie Ramsden able to repeat their solid defence from the previous game. A disappointing end to what was generally a good performance with lots to build on for their next match against Christchurch.
Bournemouth Otters 84 all out
Swanage 29 all out

Sunday 1sts versus Winton Sunday 8th June 2014
U15 Camerson Beard continued his excellent season on Sundays with 23 against a strong Winton team. His time at the crease coincided with the bowling of Bournemouth’s Southern League fast bowler Mike Kitson who he played with great confidence.

Match Report – Swanage U11s versus Christchurch Saturday 7th June 2014
The long suffering U11s had another disappointment at the weekend when Christchurch were unable to raise a team for their weekend league game. A win by default, but a game would have been much better for the U11s who are yet to play a game this season.

Match Report – Swanage U13s versus Wimborne and Colehill 5th June 2014

Weather wise it was the best evening of the season so far for Swanage U13s as they played host to Wimborne and Colehill. Batting first Wimborne started well against the opening attack of Sam Willcocks and Charlie Dyke. Sam took the first wicket whilst Charlie bowled the tighter spell, conceding only 22 runs from his 4 overs. Callum Dimarco took the only other wicket and good spells by Benjamin Wright and Matt Dunster kept it tight. However, once again it was the extras of wides and no balls that let Swanage down, as Wimborne and Colehill reached 139.
In reply, Swanage started slowly before the double loss of Benjamin and Sam in the fourth over set them back. The wickets kept tumbling with only opener Tom Hayes(9) showing any resistance to the accurate bowling. Matt and Archie Ramsden showed determined defence as they put together the longest and largest partnership of 22 but once Matt was out the innings quickly ended with Swanage on a disappointing 45 all out.
Wimborne and Colehill 139-2
Swanage 45 all out

Match Report – Swanage U13s versus Bournemouth Otters 2nd June 2014

The U13s were at home to Bournemouth Otters in the first round of the Dorset Cup. It was a close game but the performance of C. Smith, scoring 25 with the bat, turned the game and Bournemouth went on to reach 131-7. He then took 5 – 11, including a hat trick, as Swanage were dismissed for 82.
Batting first, Bournemouth lost an early wicket as Sam Willcocks (2-27) once again impressed with the ball. He was well supported by Charlie Dyke (1-19) and Ben Wright (0 -16). Wickets from Callum Dimarco and Ryan Lander along with a couple run outs kept the score down. Once again wides let Swanage down and then some good strong hitting at the end saw Bournemouth reach their 131.
The early loss of Charlie in the first over was a big setback but Tom Hayes (10) opening for the first time and Sam (12) got Swanage back in the match and Benjamin (11) also batted well. With the score at 82-6 in the 14th over the sides were fairly even and with Matt Dunster (4no) and Callum (5) at the wicket, Swanage still had a chance. However Smith’s hat trick finished the game in Bournemouth’s favour.

After missing their first 2 games because Corfe Mullen had pulled out of the league and cup, the U11s were looking forward to finally starting their season. Sadly, events conspired against them as torrential overnight rain left a soaking outfield and an abandoned match.

Hopefully June will see them finally get a much awaited game.

Purbeck School U14s

Match Report – Swanage U13s versus Winton 19th May 2014

A crowd of nearly 30 gathered to watch the U13s play their second match of the season against Winton. Under darkening skies and increasing rain they were rewarded with a tense finish as Tom Hayes and Callum Dimarco kept their heads to get Swanage over the line.
Captain Sam Willcocks won the toss and put Winton into bat. He once again opened the bowling, keeping things tight throughout his 4 over spell which went for just 9 runs. Charlie Dyke opened at the other end, taking his first wicket in his second over with Willcocks taking the first of his 3 catches. Charlie’s third over was crucial as he took 2 wickets, leaving Winton struggling at 26 for 3.
Partnerships of 22 and 24 for the next two wickets brought Winton right back in the game before first Henry Counsell then the returning Charlie pegged them back again with 2 more wickets. This left Charlie with the great figures of 4 wickets for 15 in his 4 overs. Further wickets by Thomas Johnson and Ludo Manningham-Buller and improving bowling by Ryan Lander kept Swanage on top before Matt Dunster finished off the innings with his first wicket as part of a great spell of 2.3 overs for just 5 runs.
A final score of 98 all out gave Swanage a chance to chase the total down and an opening partnership of 17 by Charlie(18) and Henry(1) gave them a good start. Henry’s dismissal brought Sam(22) to the crease and having played himself in he took full advantage of over number 6 which, with the addition of a few wides, he smashed for 24. Their partnership of 37 ended when Sam was bowled and Matt(0) followed soon after. The wickets of Charlie and then, after some big hits for 4, Thomas (9) left Swanage at 69-5 and the pressure was on.
It was Tom Hayes(6no) who saw Swanage home first in partnership with Ludo(3) and then later with Callum(5no). After Ludo’s dismissal he and Callum first saw off the last overs of Winton’s best bowlers, playing some great defensive shots and then, in the fading light, scored the ones and twos to level the scores. A wide on the first ball of the next over saw Swanage home and to their first victory of the season.
Winton 98 all out.
Swanage 99 – 6

Senior Debuts

In further youth news U15s Tom Woolen and Alex Woods made their senior debuts for the Sunday 2nds against Corfe Mullen. They both performed well throughout, having 3 overs each – Alex also taking a wicket. Both batted well after Swanage had started badly, with Alex scoring 7 and Tom 2 before they were dismissed.

Match Report – Swanage U15s versus Broadstone 16th May 2014

Another difficult cup match for the U15s saw them at home to a strong Broadstone team. Batting first Broadstone scored consistently with all their batsmen contributing to reach 226 for 2 in their 20 overs. Once again Jack McDermott was Swanage’s best bowler with 1 for 25 in his 4 overs.
In reply, the return of Cameron Beard (who also played for the Swanage 1st on Sunday) gave the batting order some power hitting at the top of the order as he raced to 24. Alex Wood (7) and Tom Woolen (12) also contributed as Swanage improved on their previous batting performance with a total of 84 all out.
Another defeat for the U15s but definite signs of improvement, particularly in the batting.

Broadstone 226 – 2
Swanage 84 all out

Match Report – Swanage U13s versus Parley Pirates 12th May 2014

In their first match of the season the always enthusiastic U13s were away to Parley. Captain Sam Willcocks won the toss and opened the bowling himself with Benjamin Wright at the other end. It was Ben who got the early breakthrough but after that Squires and Nicholls dug in and then played more expansively to both get to the 35 retirement score. This was despite the efforts of Charlie Dyke who kept things tight going for only 20 runs from his 4 overs.
Sam made sure everyone was involved with the bowling, with second overs usually an improvement on the first. But, despite his own comeback with 2 wickets and Ludo Mannigham Buller’s wicket with his first ball, the score mounted. The wides and no balls given away adding significantly to the final score of 179 from the 20 overs.
Swanage’s reply started slowly against accurate bowling and the early loss of Henry Counsell, who had kept well in the Parley innings, made things worse. He was soon followed by Benjamin and Callum Dimarco. Charlie dug in but found it hard to score and it was a partnership between Sam and Thomas Johnson who topped scored on 10 that moved the score forward. Once Sam was run out Swanage quickly collapsed with Ludo and Tom Hayes going cheaply. The dismissal of Thomas left Matt Dunster not out at the end as Swanage were all out for 35.
A big defeat against an obviously better and more experienced side but much was learnt for the future and for the next game at home against Winton.

Parley 179 – 4

Swanage 35 all out

Match Report – Swanage U15s versus Poole 9th May 2014

A challenging cup draw against Poole gave Swanage U15s their second difficult game of the week. Batting first, Poole started well and carried this momentum throughout the innings. Swanage fought back well in the middle with Jack McDermott taking 2 wickets for just 22 runs. A run out by Sam Willcocks off his own bowling put more pressure on Poole but they responded well to end up on an impressive 223-4.
A difficult chase was made more difficult with early wickets as Swanage succumbed to some accurate Poole bowling. Jack (8) impressed again but the wickets kept on falling until Swanage ended up at 40 all out.
Poole 223 – 4
Swanage 40 all out

Match Report – Swanage U15 versus Ferndown 6th May 2014

In their first league game of the season the U15s were away to Ferndown. It was always going to be a difficult game with just 2 U15s in the side and batting first this proved to be the case. A determined partnership between Sam Willcocks (8) and Jack McDermott (6) kept Swanage in the game early on but wickets kept falling until Callum Dimarco (2 not out) and Thomas Johnson (6 not out) batted through to the end with an unbeaten partnership of 15.
The total of 47 was never going to be enough and despite a tight spell by Alex Wood, bowling 4 overs for just 8 runs, Ferndown chased down the total in 7 overs. Charlie Dyke took the only wicket when Callum took a great high catch.
A difficult start for a young team but some positive moments.
Swanage 47 – 6
Ferndown 50 – 1
