Match Reports

Friday 20th July U12s v Ellingham - Ellingham won 57 runs

Swanage travelled to Ellingham for their last league match of the season. Ellingham won the toss and elected to bat first. Sid and Dexter opened the bowling and restricted Ellingham to only 14 runs in the first 3 overs. Ellingham slowly started to up the rate despite good bowling from Tom, Anthony Joe and Tia. Freddie and Seb came on to bowl and were able to make the break through both taking one wicket each. Sid came back for a second spell and took 2 wickets in his last over. Ellingham finished on 140 in their 18 overs.

Swanage’s reply got off to a steady start with Joe and Tia. Joe was caught but Tia started to play some glorious cover drives before being “yorked” for a good 22. Seb looked confident but was unlucky to be out caught and bowled for 4. Regan was next in but was run out soon after  for O. Freddie came to the crease and started to dominate the bowling with 3 consecutive 4’s but was deceived by a slower delivery which bounced and was bowled for 14. Anthony occupied the crease and battled well against hostile bowling but despite this valiant effort he was bowled for 0. Tom was obviously in a hurry and went for a big drive second ball only to sky it and was caught for 0. This brought Sid to the crease and he played the shot of the match; a cut shot for 4 and with two further cover drives ended on 13 not out. Dexter was last man in and with only 3 balls to go managed to survive and was not out 0.
Swanage finished on 83 for 7. The result was disappointing but the season has, on the whole, been a good one. Well done to you all

Wednesday 18th July U9s v Parley - Swanage won by 8 runs

After last weekend's four wins the U9s made in 5 in a row as they won the often rearranged 2017 Plate Final. Having played the semi final back in August 2017 it was a long wait but it was worth at as the U8s (or U9s!!) won by 8 runs in a thrilling game. Batting first Swanage batted consistently throughout with lots of good running between the wickets but sadly kept losing wickets to peg their score back. Some big hitting by Thomas and Josh at the end made all the difference as Swanage ended up on 257 - Josh making his best ever score of 19.

In reply AJ got Swanage off to the perfect start with a wicket first ball. Eric took a wicket in the next over but Parley were always in touch. AJ's dramatic second over saw him take 2 more wickets and put Swanage firmly in charge. A good first over by Cameron and then wickets from David and Jamie kept Swanage ahead before Harry started the last over with just 11 needed. A dot ball to start was followed by a game clinching catch by Eric and Swanage ran out winners by 8 runs

Saturday 14th July U9s v Verwood - Swanage won by 101 runs

A great performance by the U9s on Saturday as they played Verwood in a rearranged match from a couple of weeks ago. Batting first the U9s started well with Jamie and David (15) opening the batting. Thomas and Stanley continued to dominate before Eric (12) and AJ took Swanage passed the 300 mark. Alex (21) and Archie never let up as Swanage ended on 346 for only 1 wicket.

It was always going to be tricky for Verwood and a wicket in the first over from Thomas made it even worse. A run out in the next over was th sign of things to come as Swanage fielded brilliantly to restrict the runs and were able to get 3 run outs in total. Verwood never really challenged the Swanage total and ended on 245 - 4 leaving Swanage the winners by 101 runs.

Swanage 346   Verwood 245

Saturday 14th July U11s v Parley - Swanage won by 38 runs

In the Under-11's latest match, after Sid won the toss and decided to bowl first, Parley got off to a 'flying-start' reaching 244-0 off just 6 overs. However, Parley's momentum was halted in the next over when not only did Lee bowl one of their batsman out, but also, Josh ran their other batsman out with a direct-hit. In the next over, Josh also bowled someone out and this time Alex ran a batsman out with a direct-hit. The pressure was kept-up by excellent bowling from Jenson & Vinnie. This enabled Swanage to restrict Parley to 244-5.

In reply, Swanage got off to a solid start against some very accurate bowling by all the batsman particularly George & Jack, however, the 'star' performer was Sid - who 'smashed' his first half-century for the club 'hitting' 11 boundaries including a huge six (50 not out) to take Swanage to a convincing 38 run victory to remain in second place.

Parley 244    Swanage 282

Friday 13th July U10s v Winton - Swanage won by 5 wickets

It was another great Swanage v Winton match on Friday night but for once not as close as usual. Winton batted first with Barney and Kieran opening the bowling. Barney took a wicket in his excellent first over with a good caught an d bowled. Josh and James kept it tight before Max and Charlie took up the attack. It was skipper Charlie's first over that gave Seb behind the stumps to shine as first he gathered a boundary return from Josh to create a run out and then took an excellent catch next ball. Dylan bowled well and Ollie was unlucky not to take a wicket. The Winton score never rose too quickly and with the final 2 overs from Kieran and James going for just 1 run Swanage were pleased with a total of 95 - 5 to chase.

Sadly Swanage got off to a terrible start with Charlie out in the first over. Barney and Kieran steadied the innings with Kieran scoring an excellent 10 - his highest score. James made a rapid 9 but when he was out and Swanage at 42 - 4 thinks looked set for the usual close finish. Josh (20) and Dylan (16) had other ideas as they coolly put together a partnership of 56 to take Swanage home with 4 overs to spare.

Winton 95 -5   Swanage 88 - 4

Friday 13th July U12s v Ferndown - Swanage won by 5 wickets

Swanage travelled to Ferndown Wayfarers in the penultimate league match of the season. Swanage won the toss and elected to bowl first. Ferndown had a steady start against tight bowling from Tia, Freddie and Anthony. Tia took the first wicket caught behind by her brother Regan.  Sid then entered the attack and soon had Ferndown on the back foot with 2 wickets in 2 balls. Swanage kept the pressure on with tidy spells from Tom, James and Joe who picked up a valuable wicket later on in the match. Ferndown finished on 118 for 4.

Swanage’s reply started well with both Dexter and Freddie frequently finding the boundary. Freddie retired on 25 (including 5 fours) and Dexter continued to work the ball around to keep the score moving along with a solid 18. Sid was unlucky to be caught for 8 and Anthony was even more unlucky to be out hit wicket without troubling the scorers. Tom and James looked to have things under control but a misunderstanding resulted in James being run out (never run on a mis-field!). This brought Regan to the crease and within a matter of 12 balls the game was over Regan not out 24 and Tom not out 22. Swanage had won with 3 overs to spare.

Ferndown 118 - 4   Swanage 119 - 4

Tuesday 10th July U11s v Wimborne - Wimborne won by 1 run

Wimborne elected to bowl first, but, were soon frustrated by some resolute batting by both Lee and Vinnie. This solid platform allowed both Sid & Regan to flourish 'smashing' 37 and 32 respectively to enable Swanage to post a very respectable score of 284-3 from their 16 overs.

In reply, Wimborne were soon in trouble due to some brilliant bowling by Sid & Regan - who claimed 2 wickets apiece and Josh who also took a wicket. They were ably supported by Dylan, George & Jack - which led a nail-biting conclusion to the Match. Wimborne reached their target with just 1 ball to spare and were able to secure victory by surviving the last ball.

This was a very memorable, exciting game and shows just how far the team has progressed over the last couple of months.

Swanage 284   Wimborne 285

Tuesday 10th July U15s v Verwood - Verwood won by 5 wickets

This final fixture of the season pitched the Swanage side against their first opponents of the season, so there was a great opportunity to see how the side had progressed during the season. On yet another glorious sunny evening, the visitors won the toss and put the home side in to bat. Freddie and Jacob opened the innings against accurate bowling, and progressed cautiously, reaching 11 before Freddie chipped a catch back to their captain at mid off. Skipper Harry came to the crease and scored a brace of boundaries before falling to same combination of bowler and fielder, in the same over. Jacob was clean bowled shortly afterwards, leaving Ben and James as the batting pair. James took a quick single off his first delivery, but was soon bowled. Ben got going quickly and scored 4 boundaries on his way to 18 before being caught behind. The scene was now set for Ella and Tia to give the score sheet some respectability. They did so by taking the score from 47 to 110 – a partnership of 63 in just 7 overs. Ella played by far her best innings yet with a great range of shots, including a couple of balls swept to the boundary and some deft dabs into the off side. Tia played an excellent supporting role, encouraging and getting many quick singles, runs that would have been left on the table by the Swanage side at the beginning of the season. Neither bat gave any chances until Ella was pinned back in the crease and given out LBW against the excellent opening bowler (who ended with figures of 2-2 off 3 overs). Ella scored 23 runs. Andrew made a brief appearance before Tia ended the innings with an extra single and score of 17 not out. The final total was 111/7.In the previous match against this opposition, Swanage had managed only 52 runs and the opposition had chased the total down inside 4 overs for the loss of no wickets.

With a score of 111, Swanage now had an opportunity to assert themselves in the game, but it would need early wickets and scoreboard pressure. Harry and Ben opened the bowling but the opening batting pair were able to get away, reaching 51 in the first 5 overs. Freddie and Tia were the first change bowlers and Tia stuck in her first over, bowling the opening bat. Freddie bowled a good line and bowled the other opener in his second over. Andrew ran out the third bat in the same over, but then their final pair were able to get close to the target. Jacob and James bowled, but with a couple of tricky catches put down, the visitors were able to reach the necessary total in the eleventh over. The Swanage performance was very much better than in their opening fixture against the same opposition. Swanage scored more than twice as many runs, they ran quick singles and punished the bad balls better. In the field they made the opposition bat for 11 overs instead of 4 to win the game and the ground fielding was greatly improved.

Swanage 111 - 7   Verwood 112 - 3

Friday 6th July U12s V Wareham - Wareham won by 33 runs

Swanage U12’s entertained Wareham in a friendly at Days Park on Friday night. Wareham won the toss and decided to bat first. Wareham attacked right from the start and despite good bowling from Tia, Seb Anthony and Dexter, Swanage were unable to stem the flow of runs and Wareham’s first 3 Batsman all retired. Swanage then made the breakthrough with a fantastic diving catch by Dexter off the bowling of Tia. Tom, keeping wicket, took a stumping off Barney for the second wicket but Wareham continued to amass a commanding score. Lee, Jack and Barney ,all playing above their normal age group, bowled really well with Jack being particularly impressive. Joe also bowled well and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Wareham closed their innings on 163 for 2 in 18 overs.

Swanage made some changes to the batting order and Dexter and Joe were promoted and  rose to the occasion. Dexter played some exquisite cut shots and Joe played some classic cover drives and pull shots. Dexter was unlucky to be bowled on 18, just 7 short of his first “retirement” but Joe continued to play his shots and retired not out 28, which was his first “retirement” and a fantastic achievement. Tom and Tia continued the run chase, hitting 11 fours between them, and both retired on 27 and 25 respectively. Seb and Lee continued to make Wareham work for the win  but Swanage ran out of time and finished 130-2 in their 18 overs. A great game of Cricket played in a good competitive but sporting manner. Congratulations Joe.

Wareham 163 -2   Swanage 130 - 2

Thursday 5th July U13s v Christchurch - Christchurch won by 12 runs Cup Quarter Final

Having beaten Wareham in the previous round Swanage travelled to Christchurch for the quarter final. With only 8 players making the trip it was always going to be difficult for Swanage against Div 1 opposition but they showed how well they have been playing as they restricted Christchurch to 139 all out. The wickets were shared around with Regan, Tia and Spencer taking a wicket each and there were 2 wickets for both Jacob and Jake. Lots of catches were held in supporting the bowlers..

There was a flurry of early wickets as Freddie, Spencer and Andrew all fell early but Regan and Jacob turned the game around and kept Swanage in contention. They both retired on 31 and after Jake's departure it was left to Tia and James to try to get Swanage to victory. They fell agonisingly short as Tia (16) and James (7) remained not out with Swanage on an excellent 127- 4 and a narrow loss by 12 runs

Christchurch 139 all out   Swanage 127 - 4

Monday 2nd July U13s v Wimborne - Swanage won by 21 runs

Two matches in a week for the U13s showed how they have progressed this season as they beat Wimborne and then suffered a narrow defeat in the cup against Division 1 Christchurch. Against Wimborne they batted first but lost the early wickets of openers Freddie and Tia. A dogged innings by James along with an aggressive 36 retired from Jacob including 6 fours took the score along before little and large Regan and Spencer carried on their recent good form with 17 and 11 respectively. A total of 120 all out gave Swanage a chance but they would have liked more.

Early wickets by Safia and Regan both caught by Tia gave Swanage a good start but a determined 3rd wicket partnership put the pressure on Swanage. Despite some good bowling the score steadily rose. Regan returned to take a coupe of wickets before the Wimborne collapse was complete as Spencer took a wicket with his first ball and then Ella took 2 wickets in an over aided by catches from Saf and Andrew. With victory in sight the last Wimborne batter went on the attack scoring 15 off 3 balls. A huge edge looped over Andrew who dived backwards full length to take the catch one handed leaving Swanage the winners by 21 runs.

Saturday 30th June U9s v Verwood and U11s v Poole

Sadly roadworks in Sandford ruined both our Saturday games as neither team could get their full side down to Swanage. The U11s started their match with early wickets before Poole had to call it a day with only 3 players. The U9s managed to split up into 2 6 a side teams with the 4 of Verwood and got a game in which Swanage won despite the best efforts of Eric and AJ playing for Verwood.

Friday 29th June U10s v Ellingham - Swanage won by 1 wicket

The U10s entertained Ellingham in their Friday night match and a dramatic start saw  Max take a wicket in the first over. If this was dramatic it had nothing on the final over of the match some 2 hours later as last man standing James guided 2 balls in a row to the boundary to give Swanage victory by just 1 wicket. In between Swanage bowled and fielded well as they restricted Ellingham to 119. A second wicket by Max and a wicket from Ollie to a fabulous catch by Dylan were the highlights, but there was also tight bowling by Barney, Sam and Dylan. Seb kept wicket and continued his week by week improvement.

Swanage got off to a terrible start as Dylan was out in the first over. Regan and and Sam not so much steadied the ship but put it in fast forward as they hit boundary after boundary taking 14, 16 and 15 off successive overs. Regan soon retired on 26 with 4 fours and a six whilst Sam was joined by Josh. Sam with 4 fours was set for his first retirement but had to be content with his top score of 18 but Josh carried on with 4 fours and a five before retiring on 25. All seemed fine for Swanage and victory awaited with overs to spare and Barney and James at the crease. As the score reached 100 Barney was bowled and so began a Swanage collapse, as first Ollie, then Max were bowled leaving Swanage with just James and Seb at the crease. With victory still in their grasp a disastrous run out left James as one man  standing as Seb took one for the team and ran to wicket end. James kept his nerve to score the 8 runs needed to guide Swanage to their second victory of the season.

Ellingham 119 - 3   Swanage 120 - 8

Tuesday 26th June 2018 Swanage U15 v. Burley U15 - Swanage won by 43 runs

Last year’s fixture was played in very good spirit amongst the midges in the New Forest and so the visitors were happy to make the trip to Swanage, despite only having 6 players. The early summer heat continued as the visitors won the toss and elected to bowl. Harry Long was skippering the side for the second week and sent in openers Andrew and Tia. The visitors were very pleased that the home side had lent them 3 fielders. A steady start was interrupted by Andrew missing a straight ball in the second over, bring Harry to the crease. Tia hit a brace of boundaries before being caught by her team mate Andrew, fielding for the opposition. Harry also hit 2 boundaries before being undone by a straight ball. This brought Jacob and Freddie together and they formed the most successful partnership of the match, only being separated by Freddie’s retirement for a very well-played innings of 36, which included 6 boundaries. Jacob was 12 not out and Sid came in for a few balls in the last over. The Swanage total was one more than last week’s effort of 114, which was a good effort as this match was being played on grass as opposed to the rather easier-pace artificial wicket of last week. Regan, Spencer and James did not bat.

After the break Harry and Regan took the ball, with Andrew taking the gloves. Harry struck in the first over and Regan the second, both openers being bowled. This brought the best batsmen to the crease, but Freddie removed one and then Sid pitched the ball deliberately wide, enabling Andrew to pick off the bails for a fine stumping. It just remained for Harry to return for his second spell and clean up the tail with a couple more wickets. The visitors had lost all of their wickets before the end of the ninth over, handing Swanage victory by 43 runs. The home side celebrated noisily and the visitors thanked them for lending them 3 fielders and playing in a courteous manner.

Swanage 115 - 3   Burley 72 all out

Monday 25th June 2018 U13s v Wareham - Swanage won by 8 wickets

Playing Wareham for the second week running gave Swanage the chance to see if they could better last week's performance. Wareham batted first and got off to a great start with a 50 run opening partnership. Tia took the first wicket and this was soon followed by the second as Jacob took a catch off Jake's bowling. The wickets dried up but excellent bowling by Sid, Jacob and James kept the score down. Swanage also fielded well with Andrew only letting 2 byes through as his wicket keeping goes from strength to strength. As Freddie claimed a wicket in the final over Wareham ended on 125 - 3 around 20 runs more than last week.

If Swanage were worried about the chase it didn't show as Freddie and Regan started to rack the runs up. They raced to 60 in the 7th over when Regan had to retire on 36 with 5 fours and a six. Freddie carried on to 27 before being caught and bowled but Swanage were way ahead of the run rate and needed only another 46 to win. There was no let up for Wareham as Jake and Spencer came together and smashed 47 runs in 5 overs to win the match for Swanage. Jake scored a well made 17 with 3 fours while Spencer hit the ball to all parts as her scored 22 not out with 4 fours. Another fantastic performance and a great win.

Wareham 125 - 3   Swanage 127 - 1

Saturday 23rd June 2018 U11s v Verwood - Swanage won Verwood scratched

Saturday 23rd June 2018 U9s v Ferndown - Ferndown won by 18 runs

The U9s suffered their first defeat of the season as they lost to Ferndown in the cup semi final. Batting first Swanage struggled against some excellent Ferndown bowling with at one point 3 wickets in an over. Some good scoring from the later batters helped bring the total up with Alex scoring 19. This got Swanage to 238 - a lower scorer than they were used to but something to defend.

Swanage bowled much better than they had batted backed up by some good fielding. Cameron took the first wicket and was soon followed by David as Swanage put the pressure on. Thomas and Eric kept it tight before a dramatic over from Josh saw him take 2 wickets. Ferndown never really got far ahead as each time they did Swanage took another wicket. Jernimain Alex and Jamie all taking  a wicket but some excellent batting at the end saw Ferndown ease ahead o win by 18 runs.

Swanage 238   Ferndown 256

Friday 22nd June 2018 U10s v Poole 10s/11s - Poole won by 5 runs

In an exciting friendly over in Poole Swanage were narrowly defeated by a Poole team containing a number of U11s. Bowling first captain Seb organised his bowlers well making sure everyone had at least a couple of overs. Wickets from Sam (who had the fantastic figures of 3 1 maiden 1 for 6 runs), Olly and Dylan were amongst the highlights and a best bowling performance of the season by Barney who also took a wicket. Skipper Seb kept brilliantly letting only 6 byes through in a great display. Poole ended on 295 - 5 a good total but one Swanage hoped they could reach.

An excellent start by James - 18 and Kieran saw Swanage race to 230 after 4 overs. Barney and India carried on the good work with Barney scoring 11 and India 5 though a couple of wickets saw Swanage pegged back. Sam and Olly continued to move the total forward so that after 12 overs Swanage were well placed on 257. A great start by Dylan with 12 off the first over gave Swanage a boost and it was left to Josh and Charlie to try and win the game needing 22 from their 4 overs. Despite a couple of 4's from Josh and an amazing 5 off the last ball Swanage ended up 5 runs short in this exciting match.

Poole 295 - 5   Swanage 290 - 6

Tuesday 19th June 2018 U15 v. Poole Town U15 - Poole won by 31 runs

A repeat of last week’s fixture saw Swanage playing Poole Town again, this time at Poole Grammar School. On a warm, sunny evening and with the use of the artificial wicket, it looked to be a high-scoring game. Poole won the toss and elected to bat. Swanage’s new captain, Harry, took the ball for his opening spell partnering with brother Freddie at the other end. Swanage was able to limit the home’s side’s scoring to a manageable amount. By the halfway stage, Poole had mustered just 40 runs. First change bowlers Tia and Ben kept the bowling tight until bowler Ben was able to get a fingertip to a firmly-driven return shot, running out the unfortunate batsman who was backing up too far. This brought Poole best batsman to the crease and he set about the Swanage bowling with a succession of firmly-struck boundaries. He was finally undone when backing up too far. Bowler Freddie tipped off the bails before delivering the ball and the batsman was warned by the umpire for backing up too far. Unfortunately the batsman did not heed the warning and 2 balls later Freddie did the same and the batsman was given out. However, by the twelfth over the home side had reached 100 runs. Ella and Andrew each bowled, with Regan keeping matters tidy behind the sticks. Ben picked up a couple of wickets in his final over, however, the home side had reached 145 runs by the end of their innings. The fielding had become a little scruffy by this stage. At one stage a comedy of errors led to the batsmen running 5 byes. Swanage were only able to field 7 players, however the opposition kindly lent a couple of fielders their visitors.

The target of 146 was by no means unachievable given the type of wicket and the speed of the outfield. Andrew and Tia opened the batting and played sensibly, seeing off the opening bowlers. Both bats played a little uppishly, not quite getting on top of the ball, and both were caught when pushing the ball back straight in the air. This brought Ben and Harry to the crease. Swanage were going to need them both to score heavily, if they were to get anywhere near the target. They both played very well, playing themselves in and pushing back at the straight ball, before flaying the short balls mercilessly to the boundary. Ben hit a massive six before he was bowled for 27 and Harry played extremely well and patiently, retiring his captain’s innings of 35 runs, with 7 boundaries. This had taken the score to 90 off 12 overs, needing 56 off the last 24 balls. This proved to be a little too much for new bats Regan and Freddie, who were both not out, with Swanage finishing on 114 runs, their best score of the season. Ella did not bat.

It was the best performance of the season, particularly with the batting. Swanage managed to bat out their full complement of overs. They could have won the match, but were let down by their last 3 overs of bowling, leaking 41 runs with slightly tired and below-par fielding. The batting was good, but they were only able to score 24 runs in the last 3 overs. If you swap the sides’ scores for the last three overs around, Swanage would have won the match 131 to 128. Maybe next week!

Poole 145 - 5   Swanage 114 - 3

Monday 18th June 2018 U13s v Wareham (Cup) - Swanage won by 4 wickets

A beautiful evening greeted Swanage as they returned to Wareham to play in a rearranged cup match. Wareham batted first and were soon in trouble as Regan took the first of his 3 wickets. Tight bowling b y Freddie kept the runs down before Tia and Sid reduced Wareham to 40 - 4 - Sid taking 2 wickets in an over. Wareham consolidated before Jacob and James took more wickets James once again bowling well taking 1 - 8 in his 2 overs. Spencer and Jake couldn't breakthrough so it was left to Regan to take his final 2 wickets leaving Wareham with a final total of 103 - 8. Excellent catches by Andrew who kept well again, Jake and Regan helped the Swanage bowlers in keeping Wareham to a gettable total.

The early loss of Freddie put brother and sister Regan and Tia together at the crease. Tia dominated early on making an excellent 25. Andrew was run out setting  Swanage back but a cool and determined partnership of 31 by Jacob and Regan took Swanage near to victory. Jacob was run out for 15 before Spencer fell cheaply leaving James to join Regan at the crease with the scores level. A wide finished the game with Regan undefeated on 29.

Wareham 103 - 8   Swanage 106 - 5

Saturday 16th June 2018 U11s v Christchurch - Swanage won by 33 runs

Swanage bowled first in their latest match at home to Christchurch and got off to a great start as Sid and Vinnie both bowled maidens. George and Jack both followed suit later in the innings as the Swanage bowlers kept it tight. Despite their best efforts they couldn't get any wickets and as the innings progressed the total slowly began to rise. Jenson and Lee came close but it was Vinnie that finally took the first wicket. As the innings neared its close Alex, bowling his third over got 2 wickets soon to be followed by Sid who also took 2 wickets. A great team bowling performance which left Christchurch at 254 and Swanage in sight of a victory.

A solid opening partnership between George and Jenson got Swanage off to a good start. Vinnie and Jack continued to build on with Vinnie dominating the attack with a well struck 18. Jack fell twice to great catches to peg Swanage back but sensible batting by Lee and Josh saw Swanage nearing the Christchurch total. Alex and Sid ran well between the wickets and as the final over approached Swanage were 12 in front. A single off the first ball by Alex left Sid to put the icing on the cake as he scored 5 consecutive boundaries to end on 39 and Swanage ran out convincing winners by 33 runs.

A great team performance which leaves Swanage 2nd in the table - well done to all the players.

Christchurch 254   Swanage 287

Saturday 16th June 2018 U9s v Parley - Parley won by 11 runs

In a low scoring match the U9s lost their unbeaten record as they lost to Parley by 11 runs. There were a number of bowling highlights with  Jamie who claimed 2 wicket for only 3 runs the pick of the bowlers. He was well supported by Eric who took a wicket and Harry who bowled a maiden. Jernimain also bowled well and took a wicket and Josh's first over went for only 2 runs. As so often the second overs were better than the first Cameron bowling tightly second time around and Alex only going for 3 runs. Chloe started to find her old magic by the end.

Sadly Swanage could only muster 237 with 5 wickets falling really making the difference in this low scoring affair.  However we still lie second in the table and a cup semi final coming up next week against Ferndown

Swanage 237   Parley 248

Friday 15th June 2018 U12s v Christchurch - Christchurch won by 25 runs

Swanage U12’s were in cup action this week away to Division one side Christchurch. Swanage won the toss and elected to field first. Freddie and Sid opened the bowling and with good support from the fielders they reduced the home side to 11-2  in the first 4 overs with Freddie clean bowling the number 3 and Dexter claiming the assist with a run out. Swanage kept the pressure on with Tia and Tom but the home side weathered the storm with 3 of their batsmen retiring on 25,26 and 28 respectively. Anthony and Regan both assisted with run outs and good bowling from Anthony, Dexter , Seb and Joe ( not to mention Joe’s great stop off his own bowling) all contributed to keeping the home side to a respectable score of 139 with Freddie taking his second wicket in the dying overs.

Swanage’s reply got off to a good start with Freddie and Tia scoring 19 in the first 4 overs. Freddie went to a good catch in the gully and Tia followed soon after, caught in the covers. Seb Lyons was stumped for 2 which brought Regan to the crease. Regan showed his intent with a four off his first ball and continued to dominate the bowlers throughout his innings. Regan was joined by Tom but despite a straight drive for 4 off his first ball Tom was bowled soon after. In came Sid who played a mature responsible innings and together with Regan they brought the team within reach of victory. Both batted fantastically well and had to retire with Regan on 25 and Sid on 28. Despite good efforts by Joe and Dexter Swanage fell 25 runs short with still 3 overs to be bowled.

Although the result was not in our favour, there were plenty of positives to be taken from the match. We looked and played more like a team. Remember keep encouraging each other and perhaps those bails will one day go back to wales!!

Christchurch 139   Swanage 114

Tuesday 12th June 2018  U15s v. Poole -  Poole won by 6 wickets

Swanage won the toss and elected to bat first. For the second match running, the opening pair was Andrew and Jacob. Andrew started brightly, taking 7 runs off the first over. However, Jacob fell in the second over, being tempted into a shot off a ball given plenty of air. The keeper gathered the ball and took off the bails. This was a recurring pattern during the innings, with a total of 4 wickets falling to stumpings. Lily came to the crease and batted steadily with Andrew (out for 11), Harry (8 and stumped), Ryan (stumped first ball) and finally with Tia. The partnership between Lily and Tia was well-paced and productive. Tia collected 3 boundaries, including a very nicely-played paddle sweep to the mid wicket boundary. Meanwhile Lily fell for 8, James was the fourth stumped victim, Safi stuck around for a couple of runs leaving last pair of Tia and Noah. After Noah was out Tia carried on as last batter standing before she was finally bowled for an excellent 25 runs, . The final Swanage total was 75 runs.

Poole Town started quickly in reply, taking 10 off Lily’s first over. Safi opened at the other end and bowled an accurate line, and picked up the first wicket in her first over. First change bowler Tia also bowled accurately, picking up a wicket with her second ball, and then bowling another batter in her next over on her way to figures of 2/12 off 2 overs. Jacob had a couple of overs and Ryan and Harry one each. However, the visitors were able to chase down the home side’s total in the tenth over, for a victory by 6 wickets.

In summary, Swanage batted better than in the previous match. Their bowling was much improved, with fewer extras being conceded than by the visitors. Fielding was better than the last match. The big difference between the sides on this occasion was the use of the opposition’s tactic of bowling the ball full and wide, drawing the batter out of the crease, allowing their keeper to effect 4 stumpings in the match. Something to work on in the nets!

Swanage 75 all out   Poole 76 - 3

Monday 11th June - U13s v Bournemouth - Bournemouth won by 28 runs

Travelling to Bournemouth is always a difficult match but the U13s put in another great performance. Early wickets from Freddie and Regan saw Swanage on top and Bournemouth at 24 - 3. A determined partnership put Bournemouth back in the game but the scoring was slow as the Swanage bowlers Sid, Tia and Jake kept the runs down with some tight overs. 2 wickets from James as part of his best spell to date of 2 overs 2 for 6, along with a wickets for Jacob and Spencer suddenly saw Bournemouth at 90 - 7. Great batting at the end moved their final total to 131 with Regan returning for his 3rd wicket.

Swanage lost some early wickets but Jake (13) and Jacob (28) pulled the game back with a stand of 66. Time was against Swanage though as excellent late bowling from Bournemouth made scoring difficult in the final few over. In the end Swanage fell short by 28 runs.

Bournemouth 131 - 8   Swanage 103 - 8

Saturday 9th June U9s v Christchurch - Swanage won by 21 runs

The U9s travelled to Christchurch for their latest game and batted first. Jamie and Josh started the innings and batted sensibly to get the score to 220 after their 4 overs though without much opportunity to to score themselves with a series of wides. Thomas and Alfie followed with Thomas in dominant form scoring 20 runs. Alex and Jernimain kept the momentum as Swanage neared the 260 mark with hopes of another score of 300. With Harry and Zac at the crease it looked on before Harry was run out and Swanage ended on 278 - 4.

Christchurch were never out of touch but always behind. Another excellent spell by Jamie of 2 overs for just 2 runs and a wicket really keeping the scoring in check. Further wickets from Jernimain and Zac helped keep the score down but with 5 overs left Christchurch needed only 30 to win. They hadn't reckon with Thomas though as he once again took 2 wickets in an over to put Swanage back on top. Tight overs followed before it was left to Harry to bowl the final over conceding just 3 runs as Swanage ran out winners by 21 runs.

Swanage 278 - 4     Christchurch 257 - 5

Friday 8th June U12s v Verwood - Swanage won Verwood scratched

Friday 8th June U10s v Wimborne - Wimborne won by 90 runs

The U10s travelled to Wimborne for their Friday night match against a competitive Wimborne side. Bowling first, they started well as James, Sam and Max took up the attack. Despite some tight bowling there was no early breakthrough. Ollie bowled well as did Barney who was unlucky to come up against an opener nearing his retirement score. The wickets finally started falling as Wimborne neared the hundred mark and Bill on to bowl. Cool heads all round saw Seb complete a run out as confusion reined with the Wimborne batters. Bill might have had a wicket himself as the next ball was skied but was unable to make the catch. Tight overs from Charlie brought no reward but debutant Kieran finally got the second wicket to everyone's delight. James took a wicket in the final over as Wimborne ended on an impressive 155 - 3.

It was always going to be a tough chase and the early loss of James for 5 didn't help and Barney followed soon afterwards. Charlie batted solidly for 8 before becoming one of Bartlett's 5 wickets. Swanage found his left arm quick bowling difficult to play and with Kieran out it was left to Seb as last man standing. He was in determined mood and kept the out the Wimborne attack for over after over and remained not out at the end and received the biggest round of applause of the evening.

Wimborne 155 - 3   Swanage 69 - 8

Monday 4th June U13s v Winton - Winton 111 runs

Some great batting by Winton saw them post an imposing 167. All the bowlers struggled against some excellent batting and claimed their only wicket via a run out.

A good opening stand by Freddie (14) and Tia (11) got Swanage off to the perfect start but excellent Winton bowling saw Swanage struggle in reply. Jake scored 10 as last man standing as Winton ran out comfortable winners.

Winton 167 - 1   Swanage 56 all out

Saturday 2nd June U9s v Verwood - Swanage won by 137 runs

Another impressive display by the U9s saw their biggest victory of the season so far. Eric lost the toss and Swanage were put into bat with Josh joining Eric (8) to open the batting. They got Swanage off to a solid start as they took the score to 233. Thomas and Jamie were in next and really took the attack to the Verwood bowling putting together a partnership of 43. Thomas really hitting out scoring 3 fours in a brilliant 18. At 276 Swanage were looking good as AJ and Harry (9) continued to pile on the runs. Two quick wickets pegged Swanage back but as the score neared 300 it was left to Alex and Jernimain to complete the innings. Some excellent calling and running between the wickets saw Swanage passed the 300 and then head well beyond. Alex in particular batting well as he scored 21 including 3 fours. With a total of 338 -3 Swanage were well on top at the break.

After bowling and fielding poorly in the first half of their game with Poole, Swanage needed to get off to a better start and Harry made sure of it as he took a wicket with his first ball. Thomas repeated his bowling in the previous match as he once again took 2 wickets in 2 balls as Verwood struggled against the opening bowlers. Alex and Josh kept on the pressure before Jamie bowled a wicket maiden to once again put the Verwood score below 200. Thomas came back for his second over before wicket keeping and took his 3rd wicket. With Eric impressing both organising the team and as wicket keeper (including a catch off Thomas) Swanage had Verwood at 192- 5 at the half way stage.

Another wicket - this time for Alex was followed by an excellent over by Jernimain  who bowled his younger brother Michael who was kindly guesting for Verwood. A direct hit run out by AJ was the highlight of Jamie's next over as he finished his 2 overs with a wicket and no runs conceded. AJ continued his impressive bowling only conceding 2 runs in his 2 overs before Harry took his second wicket. Eric finished off the match with Verwood just getting back over the 200 mark but leaving Swanage with an impressive win and through to a cup semi final against Ferndown.

Swanage 338 - 3   Verwood 210 - 9

Saturday 2nd June U11s v Poole - Swanage won by 60 runs

The Under-11's travelled to Poole for their latest match. Swanage bowled first and got-off to a brilliant start as Sid & Regan claimed 4 and 2 wickets respectively. Jack (2) and Alex also took wickets and were well supported by Lee and Jenson which helped restrict the hosts to 210-8. In reply, all of Swanage's pairings were exceptional with George & Josh excelling. The innings was given a final flourish by Regan & Sid who both scored 20 runs to allow Swanage to finish on 270-3.

Poole 210 - 8   Swanage 270 - 3

Saturday 26th May U11s v Parley - Match Abandoned due to
 rain

Friday 25th May U10s v Winton - Winton won by 11 runs

The U10s always look forward to their matches against Winton with both matches last year going to the final ball. Honours were even with one win each. This years first clash was no exception as Winton won the toss and batted first. James and skipper for the evening Josh, opened the bowling and gave Swanage a good start. Sam was soon into the attack and took a wicket with his first ball. But a solid partnership between Morgan and Ryan gave Winton a good foundation. Charlie bowled an excellent second over before Dylan and Bill took up the attack. They both struggled in their first overs before coming back with much better second overs. Barney and India followed in the same vein as the whole team find the transfer from softball to hardball  a tricky one. Seb kept wicket for the first time finding it hard to begin with but improving over by over as the ball increasingly found the gloves.  A large extras count helped the Winton total but a tight final 3 overs from India, Sam and James - who finished off the innings with a wicket maiden, put the brakes on right at the end. Winton ended on 133 - 2 a good total but one Swanage knew they could get if they batted well.

After his excellent innings last week Dylan opened the batting with James. They got Swanage off to a great start as they struck 6 early boundaries. When James was out for 12  Sam joined Dylan at the crease. After recent disappointments, but encouraged by his earlier wicket, Sam was in no mood for another duck and got off the mark straight away. Some good running and the occasional boundary saw the Swans score steadily rise before nearing their 50 partnership Sam was out for an career high 13. Dylan carried on now joined by the aggressive Josh who carried on from last week hitting 4 boundaries in a quick fire 20 not out. With Dylan retiring on 28, another career high, Swanage moved ever nearer to the Winton total. A 4 from Bill and some quick running from Barney were sadly were not enough as Swanage fell 11 runs short of the Winton total. Another excellent game with lots of positives and a rematch in a few weeks.

Winton 133 - 2   Swanage 122 - 4

Friday 25th May U12s v Winton - Winton won by 2 wickets

Swanage travelled to Winton for their second league match of the season. Winton, generally accepted as one of the stronger sides won the toss and elected to field first. Swanage were soon in trouble with Thomas wells out first ball. In came Seb Lyons who was looking good with a classic pull shot for four. Seb was out soon after which brought young Regan Norman to the crease. Regan played a mature innings with cover drives and pull shots finding the boundary whilst wickets fell regularly the other end. Josh Wood, Anthony Ayles and James Alcock all failing to trouble the scorer. Regan, running out of partners, retired not out on 25, which left Dexter Davids and Joe Diffey. Dexter and Joe came together when the score was on 34-6. They frustrated the Winton bowlers with quick singles and Dexter hit two brilliant fours. Joe and Dexter stayed together until the end and helped Swanage reach a respectable total of 101 with Dexter not out 9 and Joe not out  2.

Swanage set out to take early wickets and Freddie Long obliged forcing a run out and then clean bowling Winton’s number 3 all in the first over leaving Winton in trouble at 4-2. Freddie supported by Regan kept the pressure on and runs were hard to find. Tom and Dexter were up next and whilst not taking any wickets bowled well. Seb came on to bowl with Swanage looking to take more wickets. Seb had Winton’s number 4 caught off a no ball but due to confusion amongst the Winton Batsman, Swanage claimed another run out. Seb then had Winton’s Star Batsman (Caitlin) caught by Regan at mid wicket and Swanage sensed an upset was on the cards. Swanage mixed he bowling up to try and take more wickets , James and Anthony both tried hard but could not get the breakthrough required. Winton hit the winning runs with just 2 wicket’s left and 9 balls to spare.

A good close game of cricket - well done to all the players

Swanage 101 - 6   Winton 102 - 6

Saturday 19th May U9s v Winton - Swanage won by 59 runs

With captain for the day Alex losing the toss, Swanage were put into bat. Harry and Zac opened the innings and Harry showed the way forward scoring a single off the very first ball of the match. They both ran well between the wickets as they scored 21 off their 4 overs and crucially losing no wickets. Josh and Alfie continued in the same vein and ran lots of singles. They were also helped by a few extras as Swanage passed the 250 mark after just 8 overs. A frustrating 4 overs for Eric and Cameron as the bowling consisted of mainly wides and no balls. They kept heir cam and took the runs for the team amassing 36 runs leaving Swanage on 289 and still no wickets. Alex and Archie, on his debut, batted last and immediately pushed Swanage beyond 300. Archie hit his first ball for 4 and batted well while Alex carried on his good form of last week top scoring with 12. Sadly Archie was bowled for Swanage's only wicket as they ended on 318 - 1 a second score of over 300 to start the season and another excellent batting performance.

With a big total to chase Winton had to make a good start which they did. Some disappointing overs with lots of wides and no balls kept them in the game and at the half way stage they were only 2 runs behind. A wicket from Zac helped the cause but everything changed with the third Winton pair at the crease. Harry took the ball after his spell as wicket keeper and took a wicket in his first over. A couple of run outs by Alfie, who was now keeping wicket, and Harry suddenly had Winton on the back foot. Cameron bowled his second over as accurately as his first, taking a wicket off his final delivery. He ended with brilliant figures of 2 over for just 5 runs and a wicket. A fabulous second over from Josh for just 2 runs and a wicket meant the contest was all but over. It was left to Harry to finish the game off with another excellent over and a spell of 2 overs for 5 runs and a wicket without a single wide or no ball. The fielding in the last 8 overs was determined but also sensible as Swanage held on to the ball realising that single were OK and the 2 run outs were a reward for the improved display. With so many wicket Winton only added 8 to their total in the second part of the game as Swanage ran out winners by 59 runs

Swanage 318 - 1   Winton 259 - 6

Saturday 19th May U11s v Parley - Parley won by 8 wickets

Swanage travelled to Parley to play the runaway Division 1 leaders in the Cup. Swanage batted first and were soon in trouble when they lost Sid and Regan early on to unfortunate dismissals. Despite this, all of the other Swanage batman applied themselves brilliantly with Alex, George, Jack, Jenson, Josh and Vinnie all digging in - this enabled Swanage to bat through all of their overs and post a respectable score of 45 against a bowling attack consisting of all District/County bowlers.

Although, Sid claimed an early wicket with the help of a fantastic catch from Lee, Parley never looked in trouble. They reached their target for the loss of no further wickets despite an excellent spell of bowling by Regan. Once again, the effort and commitment of the entire team was exceptional. They are now looking forward to getting back into league action next week at home to Parley once again but this time against their second team.

Swanage 45 - 8   Parley 47 - 1

Friday 18th May U10s v Poole - Swanage won by 7 runs

On a beautiful evening at Swanage it was the hosts who batted first. James and Ollie opened up and made a solid start. They both fell in quick succession and were soon followed by Seb. Luckily for Swanage Regan was in great form scoring a rapid 27, with 3 sixes, 2 fours and 1 lost ball, before retiring . With a big total in the offing Josh and Dylan were able to continue the attack with Josh the main aggressor while Dylan held the innings together. Along with Regan they put on 80 runs before, after Josh retired for the first time on 25, Sam was out bowled.  Dylan stayed through to the end for a dogged 13 not out. Losing Barney who didn't quite make it back for a second run. A 4 from Max finished the scoring.
There were lots of extras showing the importance of batting the whole 18 overs and Swanage ended on an excellent 124 - 5.

Max and Sam opened the bowling and were exceptional. Max conceding just 4 runs while Sam conceded just 8 from their 2 overs each. Josh took the first wicket clean bowling one of the Poole openers. Barney bowled a good spell before James and Seb took up the attack. Swanage were always ahead despite some excellent Poole batting and Regan kept the pressure on them by standing up to all of the bowlers. It was left to Ollie to claim the next wicket as Dylan pulled off a fabulous one handed catch. With Max returning for a third over, in which he claimed a well deserved wicket, it was nearly all over as he finished with figures of 3 overs, 1 wicket for just 8 runs. An uncharacteristically inaccurate final over from Josh kept it tense but Swanage ran out winners by 7 runs for their first league victory as a hardball team.

A great team performance with excellent fielding which kept the Poole batters on their toes throughout their innings

Swanage 124 - 5   Poole 117 - 2

Tues 15th May U15s v Hamworthy - Hamworthy won

Sadly the Swanage team was decimated by a combination of DofE training and a school trip to France and had to scratch this cup game

Mon 14th May U13s v Ellingham - Swanage won by 69 runs

After the improved performance against Poole in the Dorset Cup last week, hopes were high for the U13s as they started their league campaign against Ellingham. Batting first, Freddie Long hit the first ball of the match for 4, and Swanage never looked back. Freddie carried on his great run of form and raced to the 35 retirement score, including eight 4's, as Swanage established a great base for a big total. Opening partner Andrew (17) also batted well, defending the good balls whilst attacking the poorer balls. Their opening stand of 69 was further built upon by the dogged James Rowley and Tia Norman who hit 4 fours in an excellent 25. They shared a 50 stand before Tia was out LBW. This brought captain Jacob Pope to the crease who scored his first runs of the season to the cheers of his team mates. A big score of 141 - 2 put Swanage in a strong position after their 18 overs.

Freddie conceded just 1 run from his first over before Regan Norman raced in to take the first Ellingham wicket. He followed that up in his next over as he once again lit the zinger bails. Ellingham consolidated with captain Max hitting an excellent 29 despite good bowling from Tia and Archie Fenech. His innings was ended by Jacob, aided by a Regan catch. Jacob bowled tightly for figures of 2 overs, for just 3 runs and a wicket. James picked up a wicket on his last ball before Oscar and Spencer took over. Both bowled their best spells for Swanage, Spencer unlucky not to take a wicket. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Oscar's first wicket and he was promptly mobbed by his jubilant teammates. A run out  left Ellingham way behind and it was left to Archie and Regan to complete the match - Regan ending with impressive figures of 3 overs, 2 wickets for just 5 runs. All of this was backed by excellent fielding and great keeping by Andrew.

An excellent start to the league season and an impressive performance by the whole team

Swanage 141 - 2   Ellingham 72 - 6

Sat 12th May U11s v Wimborne - Wimborne won by 52 runs

On Saturday, the Under 11's played host to a very 'powerful' Wimborne side. Swanage batted first and put-up a very sound, resolute display against some very good bowling especially from the visitor's County bowler. There was particularly good batting from George, Jack, Jenson & Josh.

The total was made to look even more impressive when Sid came in and 'smashed' 28 not out from just 14 balls including 5 boundaries - one of which was a 'massive' six to enable Swanage to post 228-3.

In reply, Swanage got a wicket in the first over due to some brilliant bowling by Vinny - to claim his first-ever wicket for the club. Sid took the other wicket and was well-supported by both Alex & Lee - who was making his debut. Wimborne finished on 271-2

Swanage 228 - 3   Wimborne 271 -2

Sat 12th May U9s v Poole - Swanage won by 70 runs

The U9's travelled to Poole for  their opening game and with Harry Spurling as captain batted first. AJ Holt and Jamie Hales opened up and crucially lost no wickets as they defended well, left the wides and as confidence increased ran some great singles. Thomas Senior and Alfie Sheppard were next and were able to move the score along strongly to 251. Alfie hitting some great shots with Thomas dominating the calling. Sadly Thomas was out once but Swanage were still in a great position half way through their innings. Alex Alcock came in next along with debutant Jernimain Barry. They started strongly and kept up the momentum throughout their 4 over partnership. No wickets meant they added nearly 50 runs. Harry and Josh Duncan completed the innings with some good running though sadly both got out once. This left Swanage 324 for 3 and an overall total of 306 - a great start to the season.

Harry opened the bowling and took a wicket first ball. You could see the confidence rise through the team as Harry completed a wicket maiden. Thomas started accurately and then to the team's delight took 2 wickets in 2 balls and Poole were on the ropes. A wicket from Jamie and a run out off AJ's bowling kept Swanage on top. Further wickets came from Alex , once again 2 in an over, the second a brilliant one handed catch by wicket keeper Jamie. Josh nearly took the 9th wicket but sadly an extra bounce meant it was a no ball. With Harry finishing off the final over of the game Swanage ran out winners by 70 runs.

Swanage 306   Poole 236

Fri 11th May U12s v Wimborne - Swanage won by 7 wickets

Swanage U12’s kicked off their season with a fine win over Wimborne. Swanage won the toss and elected to field. Tight bowling from Freddie Long and Dexter Davids  put Wimborne under pressure and forced an early run out. Tia Norman also bowled well with her 3 overs only costing 12 runs. Joe Diffey then joined the attack and took a wicket with his first delivery thanks to a catch by Freddie. Seb Lyons bowled the best spell of his career with just 7 runs coming from his 2 overs. Swanage kept the pressure on with good fielding and some classic wicket keeping by the young Regan Norman. Then star bowler James Alcock stepped up and took two wickets in one over and Wimborne never recovered from this double blow. Dexter returned for his second spell and took his first wicket for Swanage. Tom Wells and Sid Nash also took a wicket each leaving Wimborne posting a score of 99-8 from their 18 overs.

Openers Freddie and Tom  got Swanage’s reply off to a flying start with Freddie hitting  3 consecutive fours in the first over. Freddie continued to hit the ball to all corners of the ground and retired on 28 not out which included 6 fours. Seb Lyons came in at number 3 and kept the momentum going with a quick fire innings of 6 which was full of positive strong hitting. Seb fell to a good catch but by this time Swanage had nearly reached their target. Tom secured the win with another boundary leaving him 26 retired not out and Swanage 100-1 in 13.2 overs

Wimborne 99 - 8   Swanage 100 - 1

Fri 11th May U10s v Bournemouth - Bournemouth won by 27 runs

A trip to Bournemouth meant the U10s had a difficult start to their season. Having got close in a cup match last year there was a determined air in the team which made up for the cold and damp evening. James Harding captained the side in a match reduced to 15 overs to try and escape the rain. Swanage bowled accurately from the start with an opening pair of Sam Wells and Max Pankhurst. Max conceded just 9 runs from his 2 overs. Captain James was next on supported by Dylan Church. They both bowled well and, despite the lack of wickets, kept the score down. Neither Josh Titley or Charlie Johnson could get the breakthrough but Bournemouth's score never rose too quickly. A great spell by India of 2 overs for just 4 runs and tight fielding left the stage set for Bill Thurgood to finally take Swanage's first wicket. A great catch by Barney Baker behind the stumps was a true reward for his excellent keeping through the innings as Bournemouth ended on 90 - 1 in their 15 overs.

James and Barney opened for Swanage, but after an early 4 from James, Barney fell early. He was soon joined by Sam before Josh joined James and they started to threaten the Bournemouth total . They combined solid defence with some great attacking shots in an excellent partnership of 39 runs. With James out for 14, Josh soon followed on 11. Max and Dylan kept Swanage going but the run rate was too much by now as the Bournemouth bowling tightened. India and Charlie saw the game out with Swanage ending on a creditable 63 - 6 from their 15 overs.

A good performance to start the season with the fielding outstanding, the bowling accurate and the batting determined.

Bournemouth 90 - 1   Swanage 63 - 3

Wed 9th May U13s v Poole - Poole won by 46 runs

After the disappointment of last night for the U15s many of the same players gathered at Swanage to play for the U13s. A pre match forward defensive practice was not put to use straight away as Swanage bowled first. There was early success for Lily Wood as James Rowley took a great catch off her bowling. Safia's first over went for just 1 run and with more success for Andrew Handcock Swanage were in the game. Sadly a high wide count also kept the Poole score rolling along. There were tight overs from Jacob Pope and a wicket for Ella McKay but Poole kept hitting out ending on 179 - 3. Swanage fielded well throughout with Oscar making some good stops on some wide balls.

Tom Wells and Freddie Long opened the batting and gave Swanage a perfect start. With strong defence coupled with an attacking flair they added 77 together until Freddie, having already hit six 4s, hit a 6 to reach the retirement score of 31. Spencer  couldn't build on his determined innings of the previous night and fell early but when Lily joined Tom they continued the attack on the Poole bowling. A sixth 4 by Tom saw him reach 31 and join Freddie in retiring. Lily kept going ending on 23 not out as Swanage reached a respectable 133 - 3.

Poole 179 - 3   Swanage 133 - 3

Tues 8th U15s v Verwood - Verwood won by 8 wickets

The early season searing heat of the previous day had largely dissipated when the Swanage team arrived at the Verwood pitch. Last season’s game at the same venue was a fairly close affair, so there was cause for some cautious optimism from the Swanage team management. Swanage went into bat under the captaincy of Lily Wood. Andrew Hancock and Jacob Pope opened the batting, with Andrew getting off the mark on the first ball of the match with 2 quick runs. However, he was caught from an uppishly-hit ball in the first over, bringing Harry Long to the crease. First ball of the second over saw Jacob caught, bringing Ryan in, scoring a single before being clean bowled when playing a rather wild pull shot. Harry dug in for a while with new bat Lily, who played very well for a score of 18, including three successive boundaries. Wickets continued to fall regularly with Harry, Safia, Ella and Freddie falling early, leaving last-man-standing Spencer to play on alone (a law change permits the last wicket to bat on alone with the previous bat playing as a runner). Spencer hit a pair of boundaries to leave Swanage on a rather below par 52 runs off 10.2 overs.

A quick turn around saw Verwood knock off the runs in just 3.4 overs, opening bowlers Lily and Freddie, being unable to contain the flow of Verwood runs.

In summary, not enough runs were scored. The Swanage batters did not heed the coach’s advice to play themselves in. Forward defensive stoke training is definitely in order as it needs to be the standard shot to a straight ball!!

Swanage 52 all out   Verwood 53 - 0

Sat 5th May U11s v Verwood - Swanage won

A win for Swanage but not in the way we would have wanted as Verwood scratched. That said a win is a win and a 9 o'clock start in Verwood would have meant a very early start!!!

Fri 4th May U13s v Hamworthy - Hamworthy won by 98 runs

Despite the result this was an evening of new experiences for many U13s as they played both on a grass pitch and in an 11 a side match for the very first time. Batting first Hamworthy look assured as they compiled a great total of 174 - 4. On a huge outfield Swanage quickly learnt how to relay throw saving lots of runs by working together. Wickets for Tia Norman, Freddie Long and a caught and bowled by James Rowley were the highlights along with a brilliant run out by Regan Norman.
After losing quick wickets Freddie, who top scored with 10, and Oscar Lander steadied the ship putting on 32 runs together. Some fine batting later by Tom Wells made sure that Swanage got within a 100 runs but sadly the result was never in doubt.

Hamworthy 174 - 4   Swanage 75 - 9
